Grab The Games: The Alters: Last Variable

Another day, another review for our fans! Today we're returning to one of the most intriguing sci-fi survival experiences with The Alters: Last Variable, the first major DLC for The Alters. Having reviewed the main game in the past, I was eager to jump back in and see what this new chapter had to offer, and I'm happy to say it expands on the core experience while staying true to what made the original so engaging.
Last Variable continues the story following one of the endings of the base game, placing players back in the role of Jan as they face new challenges and continue exploring the consequences of their choices. The expansion introduces new mechanics, fresh environments, additional objectives, and new Alters, giving returning players plenty of reasons to revisit this fascinating universe. One of the biggest strengths of the DLC is how naturally the new content blends into the original experience. Features such as the underground base, terraforming mechanics, and new specialist Alters add meaningful depth without changing the identity of the game. The writing remains one of the highlights, delivering thoughtful conversations, emotional moments, and difficult decisions that continue to make every choice feel significant.
Visually, Last Variable maintains the outstanding production values of the base game. The environments remain atmospheric, the soundtrack once again reinforces the emotional tone perfectly, and the overall presentation creates an immersive science-fiction experience from beginning to end. The additional gameplay systems also provide enough variety to make returning to the world feel worthwhile.
As for the negatives, while the expansion introduces plenty of fresh mechanics and an engaging new story, I occasionally felt that some sections became repetitive during the longer gameplay cycles. Managing similar routines over extended periods can slow the pacing, and I would have liked to see even more interactions and dialogue with the new Alters to keep every cycle feeling fresh. Fortunately, these are relatively minor issues in what is otherwise an excellent expansion.
Overall, The Alters: Last Variable is a fantastic expansion that successfully builds upon the strengths of the original game. It delivers meaningful new gameplay systems, an engaging continuation of the story, and the emotional decision-making that made the base game so memorable.
If you enjoyed the original The Alters, this DLC is an easy recommendation and a worthy continuation of Jan's journey.
