Today, I am pleased to present you a game I was thrilled to get my hands on. I am talking about the new title from the creators of Hard West called Phantom Doctrine. But what is this game? Is it worth the hype? Should you pick it up when available? Stick around, and you will find out now. Let’s start by mentioning a few things about the game itself Phantom Doctrine is a strategic turn-based espionage thriller set at the peak of the Cold War.
Drawing on a wide variety of influences and capturing the subtle intrigue of classic spy films, the game thrust the player into a mysterious world of covert operations, counterintelligence, conspiracy, and paranoia. As leader of a secret organization known only as The Cabal, you are charged with preventing a global conspiracy that seeks to pit leader against leader, and nation against nation. By carrying out secret missions, investigating classified files, and interrogating enemy agents, a sinister plot is uncovered. With the clock ticking, it must be thwarted to save the world from an unthinkable fate.
To begin with, the very first aspect that impressed me is the graphics and in general the fantastic artwork. Even though they are simple, they are sharp and create a tremendous atmosphere for everyone. Furthermore, I should mention that I loved the fact that you can play online whenever you like which means endless hours of fun in a title with an excellent story and twists always lurking around the corner. Everything feels fresh, and the devs have honestly done some fantastic work so far in this “espionage simulator” title.
The game has a deep system in which knowledge is power and a great customization feature. The investigation board is a great asset as well. As far as the negative aspects are concerned, unfortunately, the game needs some crucial fixes to be “perfect.” The AI needs a better design especially in their aim, their damage and their behavior in general when you break stealth for example. Another aspect that could be improved is that when your agents are leveled up, you can’t see which stats have changed and what stats will be changed.
To sum up, the game gives a fresh take on the genre. It manages to differ from other titles like X-COM and is unique and fun to play. Definitely try it out with friends online or offline!
